NO MARQUEE SIGNING FOR BARCELONA THIS SUMMER

From indications the Catalan giant would not get any marquee signing this summer.

Barcelona boast of having the strongest trio in attack in world football with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

They trio seem to be at their best with Messi starting the La Liga with a banger performance against Real Betis, Suarez getting a hat trick in the league opener after winning the golden boot last term, and Neymar helped Brazil break their record when he scored the last kick in a penalty shootout, helping his country get their first ever gold medal in the men’s football event at the Rio Olympics.

Since 2006, the current La Liga champions have not been this dormant in the transfer market. The spent quite a sum getting an important centre back in Samuel Umtiti and adding Lucas Digne – who might not get enough opportunities for his original position. Denis Suarez and Andre Gomez are other additions made this summer, but with established players like Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta, Sergi Roberto, Arda Turan, Sergi Samper, Rafinha, and Ivan Rakitic, it seems they would have to wait a lot to get playing time. However, with a lot of competitions this fresh season and after learning from the last campaign, it seems a nice idea not to have a modest squad.

In 2007, Real Madrid splashed over €130 million on Arjen Robben, Pepe, Wesley Sneijder, Gabriel Heinze, Christoph Metzelder, Javier Saviola, Jerzy Deudek and Royston Drenthe. Aside Pepe that proved to be a great buy, the rest pointed to an aimless transfer scheme. Of the lot, only Dudek and former Manchester United player Gabriel Heinze spent more than two seasons. Barcelona seem to be falling into the same trap this season. The former strategy of picking La Masia graduates seem to have phased out. Barca remain arguably the strongest side in the La Liga, with a funny transfer strategy this season, they sure look like a side that wouldn’t add a marquee signing this summer.
